moviegoer is a multimedia portrayal of three generations of my family. From my earliest memories, going to the cinema has been one of my favourite activities. But I’ve always wondered why. Is it genetics? Did I learn to love it? This assignment was the opportunity to find out.
I asked my grandparents and parents about the first time they went to the cinema. Gathering information like how old they were, what the theatres were like, and what films they watched. They provided different perspectives of what going to the movie theatre looked and felt like for them. But one thing was true for all of them: the experience was mesmerizing.
The piece consists of a mix of archival photos and videos of my family, both analog and digital. These are overlaid with clips from films that have impacted their moviegoing experience. Along with visual and sound elements, the piece contains written portions that provide details that describe their different first-time experiences. All three elements intend to create depth in the story of this family portrait.
The final part of the video presents my generation and how my own moviegoing experience differs from those who came before me. Overall, this piece aims to tell the story of how cinema has been a part of my family history, and how it has shaped memories and relationships that continue to influence what cinema and art mean to me today.
