Dona Nissangaratchie

Biography

Dona Nissangaratchie is a Toronto based documentary film director and sound artist whose work explores the intersections of politics, economics and everyday life. Originally from Sri Lanka, she draws inspiration from textures of her homeland, the rhythm of daily routines and the quiet resilience of ordinary people. Her films move between personal and political while uncovering how our lives are shaped by larger cultural and economic forces. Guided by empathy and curiosity, Dona treats sound as her compass and the camera as her way of listening. She approaches sound not merely as a technical craft, but as a storytelling tool that evokes emotion and connection. Her storytelling is raw, human and grounded in lived experiences that seek beauty in the truth- what does it mean to be seen and truly heard in the world we’ve built. Through image and sound, Dona creates spaces where the intimate and the systemic converge revealing the fragile poetry that lives within truth and imperfection.
