Karolina Baker

Biography

Karolina Baker is a second year MFA candidate at York University from Whitby, Ontario. She thoughtfully recognizes that she lives and makes on traditional territory of many Indigenous nations who were present long before her. Her current research is situated from within her suburban home, in search of happiness, survival tactics, and new imaginings. She is interested in how assemblage can be both a vehicle for reflexivity and an aesthetic object, simultaneously challenging conformity and gender roles. She draws on autotheory to think through her relationship to feminism and philosophy and employs not knowing and deconstruction as a generative art practice. Karolina was awarded a Canadian Graduate Research Scholarship-Masters in 2026 and twice awarded the Michael Plexman Award for creative innovation while at York. She holds a BFA (Visual Arts) from York University and a BA (Canadian Studies/Political Science) from Carleton University.
