This column analyzes Jackson's dependence on alcohol and drugs, the main character of the movie A Star Is Born (2018), with a BPS+ (biological-psychological-social-plus) model and criticizes the inability to reduce addiction to simple genetic and brain diseases or individual will problems. It shows that physical vulnerability, trauma and depression, social isolation and stigma, and loss of cultural and spiritual meaning are intertwined and reinforce addiction, and from a social welfare perspective, recovery should include not only treatment but also the design of relationships, communities, and fall-out mitigation and recovery environments.
